The Cure for Worry

worried-coupleBy Harold & Bette Gillogly

Why pray when you can worry? Say what? Yes, we know it’s backwards, but it gets the point across. It’s downright foolish to waste time worrying, when you could be doing something that could change the whole situation. Right?

It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But sometimes, we just can’t seem to dig ourselves out of our worry rut. That’s why we want to challenge you to memorize two short verses and keep them handy like a sword to carve you out of that rut and set your feet onto a solid faith footing. Here they are – “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 NLT)

This scripture will carve you out of your worry rut because it gives you such simple step-by-step instructions. 1. Choose to pray instead of choosing to worry. 2. Tell God what you need right then and there. 3. Remind yourself that God has never failed you in the past and thank Him for all He has already done for you. 4. Then claim His peace by asking Him to set His peace as a guard over your heart and mind to keep you from falling back into that worry rut again.

We are putting these steps into practice right this minute. Tomorrow morning, Bette has a nuclear stress test. She’s been having active heart issues for three weeks, so tomorrow her cardiologist wants to find out why. Stress tests are very stressful. In fact, during the last one she had a heart attack. So it would be really easy to worry over this stress test. But we have chosen to pray instead and tell God what we need.

We need You, Lord, to protect my heart from too much stress during this test and bring me through it without harm to my heart. Lord, You’ve brought us through two heart attacks, open heart surgery 13 heart caths, a new Aortic valve placement, a pace maker and 6 heart stents, so we know you are completely trustworthy. So now we claim Your peace. Guard our hearts and minds with it as we go forward with this test in the morning, knowing there’s no safer place to be than in Your arms, dear Jesus!
